Taira (he/she/they) is Japanese-born and based in London.
Informed by their experience as a minority individual navigating different cultural and social contexts, their practice explores themes within cultural politics; unpicking the complex intersections of identity, fashion, media and performativity.
Drawing on their background of being both the ‘object’ and ‘subject’ of the fashion industry, Taira brings a unique perspective. Their practice reflects a nuanced understanding of the ways in which we embody fashion to perform and subvert cultural norms, ultimately how this performativity can impact people's lives.
Taira entered the world of fashion with an exclusive contract with Prada whilst they were studying Cultural Studies at University. In conjunction with their academic background, Taira seeks to use their platform to stimulate dialogues to push the boundaries of what creativity can be/do to generate more inclusive and equitable space for all.
Taira was named the Rising Star of The Year 2020 by Vogue Japan and as a contributor to the magazine writes a column addressing current socio-political affairs, sharing their unique anecdotes.
